No matter if you are a fencer, kickboxer, kata competitor, wrestler, boxer, or any other type of martial arts competitor – one thing is shared by all and that is SPARRING!! At some point in the training phase, sparring and sparring drills will come into play to keep one’s game on PAR.

Any fighter knows aerobics and strength are key, but other components need to be developed as well. Today we will briefly touch up on the 4 Key Components of Martial Arts Conditioning. It is really important to work all 4 components in each serious martial arts conditioning session. Those components should be followed in this order:
1.) Speed/Quickness/Reactive Ability – the most sensitive with fatigue accumulation and that’s why it should be first.
2.) Strength – after the former, the muscles are triggered for strength moves
3.) Endurance – at this time the workout becomes challenging and it trains the muscles to endure, which will be imperative for fights
4.) Flexibility – best improved when the body is warm (static stretching can tend to temporarily weaken muscles due to reduced overlap in muscle sarcomere – even more reason to end with flexibility)

So have you been covering the 4 components in your training sessions?

Alicia Weber’s 2011 Florida Rowing Report (with some bicep flexing)

By: Alicia Weber Click here to visit JD Productions.

I kicked off my competitive season on Feb 6, 2011, at the 2011 Southern Sprints Indoor Rowing Championship in Melbourne, Florida. I shaved a second off my time in the 500m dash and took 4th place in a close race. 2nd, 3rd, and 4th place were all within points of a second from each other, while the winner was 3 seconds ahead.

Watch Alicia Weber in Pre-Race Bicep Flexing followed by her 500m Dash!

Next up, I visited what is to be for years to come the World Class Rowing Center in Sarasota, Florida, at Nathan Benderson Park.  This is a fabulous flat water 2,000m outdoor rowing course surrounded by a 5 mile trail.  I cycled along the trail as I videoed the lake and flexed my bicep (as I held the camera in the other hand).

Watch Alicia Weber bicep flexing and showing the rowing center, while cycling (and holding the camera in the other hand).

Aerobic Capacity Wellness Awareness Weeks with Alicia Weber

By: Alicia Weber Click here to visit JD Productions.

We are currently underway with the first weeks of 13 for the Fitness Makeover here in Central Florida where almost 30 participants are enrolled to improve their physical fitness. We begin with becoming aware of the importance of aerobic capacity wellness. There are two ways to assess aerobic capacity wellness: (1.) A direct assessment of the maximal oxygen consumption (VO2max) and (2.) An indirect assessment with rigorous exercise measuring heart rate in response to a given workload. We are reviewing # 2 and over the next weeks, personal clients, fitness makeover participants, and I will be testing aerobic capacity wellness in very unconventional ways!

The conventional ways (and standard ways) to test aerobic capacity through indirect assessment are by any of the following: 1. Rockport Walk Test, 2. 1.5 mile run/walk test, 3. 12-minute run test, 4. Treadmill Tests, 5. Bicycle Tests, and 6. Queens College Step Test. Now, we WON’T be doing any of these tests in our review.

We will NOT be “testing”, but rather trying unconventional exercises that are highly aerobic and evaluating their effectiveness based on the results of improving strength, aerobic capacity, and speeding up metabolism, and stimulating fat loss. The exercises that give the best overall results will be announced at a later date…So Stay Tuned!

In the meantime, GET ENERGIZED as Alicia Weber puts her aerobic capacity wellness to the test in a high intensity aerobic dance with strength moves!

Do you have a favorite aerobic exercise? If so, let us know by leaving a comment below.

Lake County Florida Fitness Trainer, All-Around Athlete, & World Record Holder – Alicia Weber has Unique Programs FOR ALL!

By:  Weber Way to Wellness Reporter Click here to visit JD Productions.

Alicia Weber’s claim to fame might be her 30+ World Records in Strength and Endurance and her 60 victories among 10-sports, but her business is helping people in all areas of health, nutrition, and physical fitness and taking them to a whole new level!

She takes her 15+ years of serious athletic experiences and education and creates unique programs.  She has a popular personal training program that is geared for a busy person that does not want to spend hours working out and watching everything they eat.  Alicia says,”Thrity minutes a week commitment is the minimum needed to see results.”

For those in a rush, Alicia has a 2-week “Fat Flush Fitness Rush” program that has been successful and fun, but intense.  Jenni Satterfield participates in both programs with her husband Clyde.  Jenni says this about personal training with Alicia, “Alicia is an incredible trainer that believes in you, even when YOU don’t believe in yourself. She’s by your side doing the exercises with you during your session. She’s creative and thorough with her training. You’ll rarely do the same exercise twice, so there’s no chance you’ll get bored with your personal sessions. She has YOUR best interest in mind, carefully choosing exercises to focus on your needs & working on the goals that you’ve set for yourself.”

Jenni adds, “I took a session of “Fat Flush Fitness Rush” and Alicia pushed us to the next level. She won’t let you give up because she’s constantly encouraging you & she does the same exercises with you! I can now understand how just 14 days in the “Fat Flush Fitness Rush” program will give you positive results!”

Alicia has a sport nutrition program for all types of athletes.  One athlete is featured and he found Alicia’s guidance to be crucial in getting him to the next level in elite triathlon and running.  Alicia also has nutrition programs for non-athletes and she hosts regular fitness challenges to keep people focused on goals.

Clyde  Satterfield won a recent 4-week “Lungfish Challenge” that consisted primarily of tough water workouts.  Clyde says,  “I was very skeptical of Alicia’s water workouts. I didn’t expect to get much out of them at all. I’m a guy & I like to be in the gym! Well, she proved me wrong. I was impressed with Alicia’s workouts & the results they produced. It’s a nice change of pace from the gym. I highly recommend her aquatic training and Lungfish Challenge.  She makes them fun, but even more challenging.”

Also in the “Lungfish Challenge” the 4th place finisher was also on Alicia’s nutrition program and she took off a record 3 inches off her waist in 4-weeks!

Alicia’s programs cover all areas from aquatic therapy rehab to high intensity sport performance training.  She has worked with people ages 4-97 yrs old.  Here is a short list of some programs available in Lake County Florida (outside of the ones listed above):  water aerobics, dance classes, aquatic therapy, martial arts conditioning, programs to get military and cops in shape to pass the fitness tests, balance and coordination training, programs for people with arthritis, fibromyalgia, and diabetes, “Weight Loss by Water” program for obesity, running and triathlon coaching, and programs for better golf.
Alicia has ongoing programs in Lake County Florida and she can be reached   at  Awinningway@gmail.com  or on Facebook.

Health in Corporate America for Profit and Productivity

Foreword: As a Fitness/Nutrition/Solutions Consultant I interview top professionals and write educational, entertaining articles that are hopefully thought provoking for my readers.

By:  Alicia Weber

In a rush to satisfy job requirements, do you think you ate some quick, unhealthy snacks that may have left you lackadaisical? Could it be that you love your job, but may wish that you had a higher income and could work fewer hours?

Or is everything wonderful, but you may not be sure if you have health insurance that would cover the upcoming doctor and physical therapy bills?

The employment statistics suggest that people are turning to self -employment more than they were a decade ago and fewer employers are offering healthcare coverage. According to the U.S. Census Bureau for Health Insurance, 47 million Americans are without health insurance and young adults are the fastest growing uninsured population. It is time to think about preventative health.

Just as on a job an employee is to be prompt, prepared, and productive, when it comes to one’s health everyone should be prompt, prepared, and preventative.

Being health preventative and productive with profit is a doable combination in Corporate America and below one can find out.

Rule # 1: Biofeedback Without Barriers.
Any great athlete can explain the monumental wins from biofeedback and mental preparation including Michael Jordan, Greg Louganis, Tiger Woods, and Venus Williams. Sports or business, one must think about what they want to have happen regularly and let the thoughts go from awareness to actions. You have to have a vision before going on a mission. Many times I thought of how I wanted things to be and before I knew it everything happened and it was normally better than what I dreamed. I would have to keep pinching myself!

“Empty pockets never held anyone back. Only empty heads and empty hearts can do that.” – Dr. Norman Vincent Peale

Rule # 2: Eat Smart to Think Smart.

Getting rid of soda pop and enriched, bleached white flour products alone, I see 50% increased energy level and productivity with my personal clients and not to forget to mention weight loss! If it is white, don’t bite! The Bureau of Labor Statistics reports an almost 5 percent annual growth rate for food eaten at home. People might be pinching pennies for cheaper food, but don’t get cheap with your health. Your health is everything. Smart shopping can keep one healthy and save money. During a tough time in ’02, I was able to keep my grocery bills under $70/month and spend no more than $30/month at restaurants. By making large quantities that can be frozen or refrigerated and buying good proteins to consume, one can save money and stay healthy as I did. My favorite is making a huge bowl of fresh salad and adding fish to it to eat during the week! Certain dishes including chili, lasagna, pasta, and soups are other foods that can be made in large quantities and gobbled throughout the week.

Key nutrients that can keep one smart and healthy include, but are not limited to the following:

1. Omega 3 Fatty Acids – imperative for mental and heart health found in salmon, tuna, and nuts

2. B vitamins – maintain mental skills and keep depression at bay also found in salmon and nuts, as well as chicken breast, avocado, banana, broccoli, orange juice, baked potato with skin, spinach, black-eyed peas, garbonzo beans, lentils, pinto beans, and spaghetti

3. Vitamin C – strengthens immune system and can be found in all citrus fruits and juices, tomatoes, and green peppers.

* These vitamins are also known to prevent heart disease, certain cancers, and stroke.

* These vitamins are also known to prevent heart disease, certain cancers, and stroke.

Some people might think of fitness and associate it with sweat, long-enduring workouts, pain, perserverance, and muscle aches. On the contrary, obtaining fitness can be about taking just 5-minutes to exert muscles in multiple movements.
Fitness at the workplace could be about taking a few deep breaths of deep breathing, taking the stairs, performing a few moves of chair yoga, and walking brisk intervals around the office with a few final stretches.

In any event, studies show exercise has a direct benefit to alertness and keeping stress down on the job. One easy and beneficial “belly-breathing” exercise called Tortoise Breathing is S-L-O-W and known to help with alertness, better concentration, and stronger immunity and it is easy to do on the job! Just take a minute and try Tortoise Breathing below:

1. Stand or sit without slouching. Inhale slowly so that your chest, diaphragm, and lower abdomen expand.

2. Exhale slowly so that your chest, diaphragm, and lower abdomen contract.

3. Finally, begin timing your breathing for one minute: an inhalation and exhalation count together as one breath. Goal 2 – 4 breaths a minute. Typically people just starting out take 8-12 breaths a minute. Combine biofeedback with this breathing exercise and you will be on your way to better health, profit, and productivity!

* Taking preventative health measures has been a proven success with one of the most stressful jobs of that of a Deputy Sheriff of the Orange County Sheriff’s Office in Orlando, Florida.

Corporal Pat Reilly, Wellness Coordinator for the Orange County Sheriff’s Office knows how preventative health measures work wonders for employees on and off the job and he starts by saying, ” With the inherent risks connected to Law Enforcement, individual health and fitness may be the difference in winning or not winning a confrontation. A regular exercise program is proven to reduce health care expenses, limit work time missed due to illness, aid in recovery time from injury or illness, improves sleeping habits, impacts performance and daily activity, etc. These are some of the obvious benefits of becoming and staying involved with any Wellness program.”

Corporal Pat Reilly seen in front of the state of the art Fitness Center located at the main Sheriff’s Office complex in Orlando where Group Exercise classes include Indoor Cycling, Abdominals, Yoga, Self Defense – Jui Jitsu and Aikido.Corporal Pat Reilly, Wellness Coordinator, has over 1,000 fitness center users a week in a wellness program and he says, “The most applicable benefit of our preventative health and exercise programs is the overwhelming physical fitness gains observed and documented by employees participating in our Diagnostic Fitness Assessment Testing program also known as “The Program FDS”. We have developed a digital, diagnostic testing program which gives a participant immediate readings of Body Composition, Flexibility, Upper Body Strength and Lower Body Strength assessment testing. This 5 minute assessment program keeps our personnel ‘connected’ mainly because of the ‘awareness’ and ‘comparison’ factors attached to The Program. Employees immediately see health and fitness gains as well as allowing them to learn of negative gains before “slip-ups” have disappointing effects.”

Preventative Health in Corporate America is clearly the proven way to go for TOP profit and productivity!
